John was born within the parish of St Mary’s C of E Church, Stockport,. He was the son of George and Mary who lived at 67 John Street.

His original service number, 2486, suggests he was either a pre-war member of the Territorials or joined within a few days of war being declared in August 1914, A summary of the Battalion’s early months of service is here. At some point, John served with the Machine Gun Corps (service number 21887) before returning to the Cheshires, sometime after January 1917.
