Date of Death:

The name of R W Taylor appears on the Stockport War Memorial amongst those who served with the Manchester Regiment. He was probably Richard William Taylor who was born in the Stockport area in 1895, although there is no information to corroborate this.

Unsurprisingly, official records include the names of a not inconsiderable number of men called Taylor and who have the initial "R" but it has not been possible to identify anyone with a specific connection to the Stockport area amongst the dead. The War Graves Commission lists 13 men with the initials "R W" but none served with the Manchesters or have a local connection. Similarly, the medal entitlement records held by the National Archives include no record of a man with these initials serving with the Regiment (although there are 14 men called Richard who did serve).

It is possible that he never served abroad (and, therefore, had no entitlement to medals) or that he didn't actually serve abroad with the Manchesters. With the passage of time, it seems unlikely that his story will now be told.
