As far as it has been possible to establish, the family name is spelt as above and not as the more usual Bissett. It is, perhaps, not surprising that Rowland’s name has been wrongly inscribed on the Stockport War Memorial with the more common spelling.

In the late spring of 1890, William Bisset and Kate Tuck married at St Mary’s Church, Cheadle. Rowland was born on 29 July 1893 and the family history website, CheshireBMD, records births information which suggests he had younger siblings – Andrew born in 1895 and Caroline in 1896. The family are known to have lived at 16 Dialstone Road. William is believed to have died in 1916, aged 57.

Nothing is known of Rowland’s life but his service number may be low enough to suggest he was a pre-War sailor. As a Wireman, he was one of the ship’s electricians. He died when his ship was sunk at the Battle of Jutland.
