Luke was the son of Joseph and Elizabeth Ann Albiston, 68 Aberdeen Crescent, Stockport. He enlisted in Stockport and his service number is consistent with him originally being a member of the 1/5th (Territorial) Battalion and still being a member of that unit when six-digit numbers were allocated at the beginning of January 1917.

Luke took part in an attack in the latter stages of the Third Battle of Ypres. Afterwards, he was posted as being wounded and missing. However, no further information was forthcoming and, on 6 December 1917, his parents placed an advert in the Stockport Express asking for any news of him. They presumably hoped that he was in hospital or, perhaps, had been taken prisoner.

Sometime later, the War Office would have written to Mr & Mrs Albiston confirming that Luke must have been killed. His body was never found and identified.
