William had been born in Barnsley, the son of Eli Thornley. The family later lived at 6 Kendal Street, South Reddish. It's thought that Eli was a police officer and, certainly, a man of that name, aged 26 and born in Stockport, was shown on the 1901 Census as living in Litherland, Lancashire.

William enlisted in the army in Stockport. His service number suggests that this was very soon after war was declared in August 1914. He was killed in fighting at the Battle of the Lys.
