The name of E A Tinsley is inscribed on the Stockport War Memorial amongst those who served with Welsh Regiments. It was relatively easy to confirm his identity. The Cheshire Year Book confirmed his date of death as 27 February 1919 and a man of this name did indeed die locally on this date. He was 19 year old Edward Arthur Tinsley who died at 72 Northgate Road. He had fallen victim to the tailend of the worldwide pandemic of influenza, which had turned to pneumonia. Edward had worked as an apprentice to a letterpress printer.

However, it has not been possible to confirm that this young man undertook any military service during the War. He may have enlisted but been quickly discharged due to ill health. However, research indicates that the entries in the Year Book were drawn from press reports which were not always accurate, although they appear to have been used as a basis for compiling the names to be included on the Memorial. Therefore, this may be a simple error in that either a local newspaper or the Year Book made an assumption that an apparently fit young man must have been conscripted into the forces.
