James VERNON
Rank: Private
Number: 243641
Unit: 1/6th Battalion Cheshire Regiment
Date of Death: 31st July 1917
Age: 40
Cemetery: Menin Gate Memorial, Ieper, Belgium

James had been born in Bristol but by the time of the 1901 Census had moved to Stockport. He was then aged 24 and was working in the town's major industry as a felt hat planker. Another man, Hezekiah Vernon, aged 31 and also born in Bristol was listed as working as a felt hat blocker. He must have been a relative of James', possibly a brother.

James enlisted into the army at Stockport but it is not known when. The above service number can be attributed to the 1/5th Battalion so, assuming it is correct, James must have transferred to the 1/6th not long before he died.
