Robert VERNON
Rank: Private
Number: 204468
Unit: 362nd Company LABOUR CORPS
Date of Death: 17 June 1917
Age: 37
Cemetery: Cheadle & Gatley Cemetery

Robert was the eldest child of Robert and Mary Vernon. In 1901, when the Census was taken, he was living at the family home in the Brinnington area of Stockport where he earned his living as a baker. In the same year, he married Matilda Poole in a civil ceremony at Stockport and they are thought to have set up home at 11 Peter Street, Portwood.

An examination of the records at the National Archives indicates that Robert never served abroad during the War and, as such, had no entitlement to campaign medals. There are now no details of the 362nd Company so it is impossible to know what sort of War-related work Robert would have undertaken. It is known he died from natural causes in a military hospital at Oswestry.
