John BLEACKLEY
Rank: Private
Number: 244677
Unit: 15th Battalion CHESHIRE REGIMENT
Date of Death: 24 March 1918

Cemetery: Pozieres Memorial, Somme, France

Regimental records indicate that John was born in Stockport but neither he, nor his mother Mrs Mary Bleackley, appear as local residents on the 1901 Census. Next of kin records indicate Mrs Bleackley lived at 11 Sheffield Street, Heaton Norris.

John’s service number suggests he enlisted after 1 January 1917 (when six-digit numbers were introduced). The number is one of a batch used by the the 5th Battalion, Cheshire Regimnent, a Territorial Army Battalion. It’s not known when John will have transferred to the 15th Battalion.

He was killed during a major German attack described here.
