John is thought to have been a regular soldier, or an ex-regular recalled to the colours when War was declared. He had previously served with the Army in South Africa, probably just after the Boer War. He was the son of Edward and Mary of 17 Wild Street (and previously 14 Lord Street), Stockport. The 1901 census shows John, aged 16, working as a grocer's vanman, so he probably joined the army when he was 18.

54th Company was part of the Army's 7th Division which was formed in September and October 1914. Assuming that John was an original member, then he will have gone overseas in the middle of October. He will have stayed in France and Belgium for exactly three years before being transferred to Italy. John is understood to have died from natural causes whilst at an army field hospital.
