Ernest WANT
Rank: Private
Number: 201894
Unit: 13th Battalion Cheshire Regiment
Date of Death: 10th August 1917
Age: 20
Cemetery: Menin Gate Memorial, Ieper, Belgium

Ernest's father, Henry, originated from Mallishall, Norfolk. Between October and December 1884, he married Grace Morton, at Stockport. In 1887, they had a son who they named Henry and, in about 1898, Ernest was born. The 1901 Census shows Henry, senior, then aged 43, working as a manager in a tea and coffee business. His son was also working in the business as a packer. Grace, who had been born in Eccles, was then aged 44.

Ernest's service number indicates he was a recent recruit and probably only joined the Battalion as part of a group of replacements for those killed and injured during the Battle of Messines, in June 1917. He was killed in an important attack described here.

Ernest's cousin, George Want, is also commemorated on the Memorial
