Leonard BLEASE
Rank: Private
Number: 265360
Unit: 1/6th Battalion CHESHIRE REGIMENT
Date of Death: 31 July 1917
Age: 21
Cemetery: Menin Gate Memorial, Ieper, Belgium

Leonard was the son of Mary Florence and the late George Blease of 20 Petersburg Road, Edgeley, Stockport. His original service number was 1483. Such a low number indicates that he was a pre-war member of the Territorial Battalion and would have been mobilised in August 1914, when war was declared. The Battalion’s early months of war service are described here.

Tragedy first came to the Blease household when, in the summer of 1916, news arrived that Leonard’s older brother, John, had been killed on 9 July, whilst serving with the 18th Battalion, Manchester Regiment.

Leonard was killed in the attack that marked the first day of the Third Battle of Ypres. It was the town’s worst day of the war and, like many of his mates, Leonard has no known grave.
