This name is inscribed on the Stockport War Memorial amongst those serving with the artillery. There is no-one with this initial recorded by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission as having any obvious connection with the Stockport area.

Whilst looking at these records and the CD-ROM “Soldiers Died in the Great War”, one man has a tentative fairly local connection having been born in Manchester and enlisted in the City. This is Gunner Herbert Watson who served with 19th Siege Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery but who died of natural causes on 25 March 1917. He is buried in the graveyard of St Mary’s Church, Long Preston, Yorkshire and the CD-ROM notes that he lived there.

It is, of course, possible that the man commemorated in Stockport is not him and may be someone whose connection with the area has not been recorded (the War Graves Commission does not record next of kin in all cases).
