Ben WHALLEY
Rank: Gunner
Number: 183812
Unit: 19th Siege Battery ROYAL GARRISON ARTILLERY
Date of Death: 4 September 1918
Age: 19
Cemetery: Hem Farm Military Cemetery, Hem-Monacu, Somme, France

Nothing is known about Ben, except that army records, published after the War, show him to have been born in Stockport and that he enlisted in the town. His age suggests that he will have been conscripted when he became 18.

The Siege Batteries fired the heaviest weapons in the arsenal of the British Army and were situated some considerable way behind the front line. Unfortunately, few day-to-day records of their activities still exist and it is not possible to know the circumstances under which Ben was killed. It is, however, reasonable to assume that, as with most artillerymen, he was a victim of shelling by the German artillery which had targeted the gun emplacements.
