John Henry WHEELDON
Rank: sergeant
Number: 12042
Unit: 8th Battalion Cheshire Regiment
Date of Death: 6 June 1916
Age:
Cemetery: Amara War Cemetery, Iraq

John Wheeldon originated from Drift, in Cornwall but it is thought he had lived in Bredbury for a considerable time. Nothing is known about his private life, other than he enlisted into the army in Stockport in August or septmeber 1914.

He was wounded in the fighting described here. Afterwards, he wrote a letter of condolence to the parents of Thomas Lloyd in which he mentions the wound. It is not thought that he died of these wounds some two months later. Regimental records do not record his death as "died of wounds". The annotation is simply "died", normally implying a death through illness or otherwise non-combat related.

There was an exceptionally high level of illness - dysentery, cholera, etc - amongst the troops here.
