Thomas had been born within the parish of St Matthews C of E Church, Stockport. As a young man, he joined the army and served in the Boer War with the Cheshire Regiment. He had finished his required time as a reservist, but was a member of the Territorials. He was mobilised in August 1914 as described here.

This meant he had to leave his job at Andrews Ltd, Engineers, Waterloo Street, Stockport. He also had to leave his wife, Mary Elizabeth and daughter at home at 8 Queen Street, Portwood.

Thomas is understood to have died, from natural causes, at a military general hospital at Le Havre.
