Sam WHITELEY
Rank: Private
Number: 7835
Unit: 1st Battalion Cheshire Regiment
Date of Death: 24 August 1914
Age: 25
Cemetery: La Ferte-sous-Jouarre Memorial

Sam had been born in the Harpurhey district of Manchester but was living in Stockport when war was declared. He was married, with two children, and lived at Range Road, Stockport. He earned a living as bricksetter. At some point, he must have served as a regular soldier and been recalled to the colours, as a reservist, when war was declared on 4 August.

An account of the action in which he was killed is here. Sam was originally posted as missing and it was not until February 1916 that the authorities confirmed that he must have been killed on 24 August. His body was never recovered and identified.
