Rank: Private
Number: 266535
Unit: 9th Battalion Cheshire Regiment
Date of Death: 6 June 1918
Cemetery: Chambrecy British Cemetery, Marne , France

Nothing is known of Joseph Whittaker's life, other than Regimental records indicate he was born in Stockport and enlisted at Hyde. His service number is consistent with him originally joining the local Territorial Battalion - the 6th Cheshires - sometime after January 1917, before being transferred to the 9th Battalion. It is possible that he trained with the Territorials but was transferred when he went on active service

He was killed during fighting described here. Chambrecy Cemetery was not created until after the Armistice in November 1918. It is possible that his body remained unburied for several months, although he may have been buried close to where he died and was later moved when the land was returned to civilian use.
