Harry was born in Millbrook (near Stalybridge), the son of William and Jane. His parents later moved to live at Charlotte Street, Brinnington, Stockport.

At the time of the 1901 Census, Harry was working as a grocer's assistant. Between July and September 1909, he married Florence Clegg and it is understood they lived at 67 Union Street, Stockport. Harry's service number suggests he was not a particularly early volunteer to the army and may have been conscripted in 1916. He was killed during an attack at the Third Battle of Ypres and, as with many men that day, he has no known grave.
