William Robinson WILKINSON
Rank: Private
Number: 268224
Unit: 1/6th Battalion CHESHIRE Regiment
Date of Death: 20 September 1917
Age: 28
Cemetery: Tyne Cot Memorial, Zonnebeke, Belgium

The Census shows William, then aged 12, to be living in Oldham, having been born nearby in Lees. By the time he enlisted in the army at Stockport, he was living in Bredbury, but nothing more is known about his private life. He was killed in the action described here.

The Memorial records him as serving with the 1/4th Battalion. He may have originally been a member of that unit, but his service number and date/place of death, confirm that he was with the 6th Battalion when he died. His earlier service numbers,  4195 and 15424, could have been allocated to a 4th or 6th Battalion soldier.
