Charles Alfred WILLIAMSON
Rank: Private
Number: 267900
Unit: 1/6th Battalion CHESHIRE Regiment
Date of Death: 31 July 1917
Age: 20
Cemetery: Menin gate Memorial, Ieper, Belgium

Charles was born in Stockport and the family history website, FreeBMD, suggests that his birth was registered between July and September 1896. Other than the fact that he enlisted into the army in Stockport, nothing is known about him. His earlier service numbers, 5262 and 15094, suggest that he did not enlist until probably 1916 and that he may have had a change of unit before coming back to the 6th Cheshires sometime after 1 January 1917 (when six-digit numbers started to be allocated.)

He was killed during the Battalion's attack on German positions at St Julien, on the first day of the Third Battle of Ypres (Passchendaele). As with many of the local men who died, he has no known grave and is commemorated on the Memorial to the Missing.
