David was born in the parish of St Thomas’ C of E Church, Stockport. He was married, with four children, and worked as a doubler at the cotton mill of T & J Smith Ltd, Brentnall Street. David enlisted at Stockport within days of war being declared on 4 August.

He was at No. 4 Canadian Hospital when he died. A nursing sister later wrote to Mrs Allen “Your husband had been sick for several days before being admitted to this hospital having, I believe, suffered from several attacks of malaria. We used every treatment known to avail in that condition and some improvement was effected. Unfortunately, pneumonia developed: we did our best, but he died very suddenly about 8.45pm.”

After the War, his wife had married a Mr Littler and was living at 39 Johnson Street,Stockport.
