William BOWDEN
Rank: Private
Number: 11676
Unit: Depot (or 3rd Battalion) CHESHIRE REGIMENT
Date of Death: 1 November 1918
Age: 46
Cemetery: Chester General Cemetery, Cheshire

Nothing is known about William's pre-war life, except that he was born in the parish of St Paul's C of E Church, Great Portwood Street, Stockport and he volunteered for the army in the town. His service number confirms he enlisted in August 1914, just after war was declared.

The National Archives' on-line "medal entitlement" database confirms he was entiled to service medals and must, therefore have been on active service overseas. At some point he returned to the UK but it is not known if this was because he had been wounded or become ill. Regimental records record that he "died" (a designation normally indicating a death through natural causes, as opposed to "died of wounds"). His assignment to the 3rd Battalion or Depot, indicates he had not been discharged from the army and had been expected to return to duty.
