James had been born and brought up in Stockport and lived with his wife and child at 3 Read Street. He enlisted in the army, during late 1915, in the town. He was killed in a major attack described here. He was originally posted as missing and it was not until June 1918 that the military authorities confirmed that he must have been killed. The Stockport Advertiser reporting this also noted that his brother was a prisoner of war.
