John (Jack) ALLEN
Rank: Private
Number: 265406
Unit: A Company, 1/6th Battalion CHESHIRE REGIMENT
Date of Death: 31 July 1917
Age: 20
Cemetery: Menin Gate Memorial, Ieper, Belgium

Jack Allen had been born within the parish of St Thomas’s C of E Church, Stockport. His parents, Tom and Lizzie lived at 102 Shaw Heath.

He was a pre-war member of the Territorials (service number 1571) and would have been mobilised when war was declared in August 1914. He was probably aged 17 at that time – too young for overseas service. Possibly he did not go abroad until he was 18, but it is more likely that a ”blind eye” was turned to his age. A description of the Battalion’s early months of service is here.

He was killed in a major attack at Ypres described here.
