Rank: Private
Number: 4276
Unit: 1/6th Battalion CHESHIRE REGIMENT
Date of Death: 13 November 1916
Age: 19
Cemetery: Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France

Edward was the son of George Eli Burgess and Emily Mary Burgess of 5 Billinge Street, Shaw Heath, Stockport. He had been desperate to join the army with his pals, but had been refused on four occasions due to a "deformity" in his legs. In a final attempt, he entered Stockport Infirmary, had both legs broken and reset. This involved 20 weeks treatment and, with no National Health Service, would have been something the family would have had to pay for,

He was killed in the battalion's first major attack as described here. Edward's body was never recovered and identified and he is commemorated on the nearby Memorial to the Missing.
