By co-incidence two local men, both called John Burns, were killed on the same day.

The man with the service number 10060 had been born in Edgeley, Stockport. He was married, with one child, and lived at 41 Ratcliffe Street. He worked as a labourer.

All that is known of the other man is that he was born in the parish of St Matthew's C of E Church, Grenville Street.

Both men enlisted very shortly after war was declared and will have gone overseas as part of the first drafts of replacements for the regular army soldiers, of the First Battalion, who had been killed or wounded in the first months of the War. Click here for details of the day they were killed.
