Francis Patrick CALLAGHAN
Rank: Private
Number: 9415
Unit: 2nd Battalion CHESHIRE REGIMENT
Date of Death: 3 October 1915
Age: 23
Cemetery: Loos Memorial, Pas de Calais, France

Francis was born in nearby Glossop. It's not known when the family moved to Stockport but, after the War, his mother was living at 7 Coronation Street. He had joined the regular army as soon as he was able, at the age of 17 and was serving with the 2nd Battalion in India. They returned to Britain on Christmas Eve, 1914 and there was only time for a few days leave before they left to go to France.

On 3 October, Francis took part in fighting at the Battle of Loos. At roll-call, he was posted as "missing". It was not until March 1916 that the War Office made an official determination that he must have been killed. His body was never found and identified.
