Nothing is known about James Carney's life, other than regimental records indicate he was born in Stockport and enlisted in the town. His service number confirms he was either a pre-war member of the Territorial Army or joined within a day or so of war being declared in August 1914. An account of the Battalion's early months of service is here.

James was killed in action during fighting in the latter stages of the Battle of Somme. Click here for details.
