Harold had been born in Tipton, Staffordshire and his parents, Teresa and Alfred, moved to 44 Yates Street, Brinnington, Stockport, when Harold was still a young boy. He attended St Paul's School and, later, St Joseph's School. He worked at Pear Mill. His original service number, 1552, indicates that he was a pre-war member of the Territorial Army and would have been mobilised into the 6th Cheshires when war was declared in 1914. An account of the Battalion's early activities is here.

It's reported that he was twice wounded and gassed once, whilst serving with the Territorial Battalion. Territorial soldiers were re-allocated six-digit service numbers in early 1917 and Harold's was 265394. He will have been transferred to the 10th Battalion after this time, probably after returning to duty after recovery from one of the wounds.
