H ANDREW

Number:
Unit: CHESHIRE REGIMENT
Date of Death:
Age:
Cemetery:

This soldier is recorded on the Memorial at Stockport Art Gallery as serving with the Cheshire Regiment. It has not been possible to positively identify him. The Commonwealth War Graves Commission records 15 soldiers called H Andrew and many more who have another initial letter.

One possibility is that he was Harold Andrew who died on 29 July 1918 serving with the Cheshires. His parents lived nearby in Dukinfield.

His name might have been duplicated on the memorial and he is, in fact, Charles Herbert Andrew. He was known as Herbert.

A third possibility is that the 1918 Absent Voters List records a Herbert Andrews, serving with the 8th Battalion Cheshire Regiment, with a home address of 14 Tame Street. Although he is not recorded by the Commission as a casualty, he may have died after the war ended, his death not being officially recognised as being due to war service.

However, this is speculation and his identity will remain a mystery.
