Charles Edward CHADWICK
Rank: Private
Number: 35231
Unit: 1st Battalion CHESHIRE REGIMENT
Date of Death: 26 September 1916
Age: 24
Cemetery: Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France

Charles was the son of Edward and Sarah Jane Chadwick, 17 St Matthews Road, Edgeley, Stockport. He worked in the local cotton industry as a doubler at the mill of Walthews Ltd.

On 25 September, Charles took part in an attack described here. The attack was successful and the Cheshires dug-in to consolidate. The next day, their position was fired on by enemy artillery and Charles' officer wrote to the family saying he had been killed by a shell. This presumably explains why he has no known grave and is commemorated on the Memorial to the Missing.
