Arthur CHATTERTON
Rank: Private
Number: 36823
Unit: 9th Battalion CHESHIRE REGIMENT
Date of Death: 24 March 1918
Age: 36
Cemetery: Arras Memorial, France

Arthur was born in Hornsey, Middlesex, the son of Joseph Elijah Chatterton and Ann Sarah Chatterton. By the time of the 1901 Census, the family was living in Stockport, probably at 120 Prince's Street (Mr & Mrs Chatterton's address post war). The Census records that Arthur was then working as a packer in one of the town's hat-making factories. It also records Rose and Emily Chatterton, aged 14 and 20, also born in Middlesex, who were probably his sisters.

In later life, Arthur married Amy Caroline who, after the war was living at 16 Ducie Street, in the Chestergate area of town. It is not known if this is the home they both shared. Arthur enlisted in Stockport and his service number indicates this was in early 1916. He was killed during a major German attack described here.
