Arthur was the son of Frank and Lydia and had been born in Levenshulme as had his younger sister, Ethel. The family moved to the Heaton Chapel area in the late 1890s and lived at 108 Manchester Road. A third child, Agnes, was born in the autumn of 1900.

At the time of the War, Arthur had married Minnie and they are thought to have lived at 48 Rhyl Street, Heaton Norris. He died in an accident at Sidcup. The details are not known but his body was brought back to Stockport for burial. His coffin was draped with the Union Jack and the funeral, on 28 March was conducted with full military honours. Arthur never served abroad.
