John Henry CLAYTON
Rank: Private
Number: 27829
Unit: 1st Battalion CHESHIRE REGIMENT
Date of Death: 5 September 1916
Cemetery: Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France

John was born in Brighouse, Yorkshire and the 1901 Census suggest he was living there at the time. The Census records two boys named John Clayton living in Brighouse - one aged 8, the other 11, but it is not known which is John H Clayton.

By the time John enlisted in the army in Stockport, probably around mid-1915, he was married to Lavinia and was living at 18 Clarendon Street, Heaton Norris.

An account of the action in which he was killed is here.
