Michael T CLEARY
Rank: Private
Number: 14553
Unit: 11th Battalion CHESHIRE REGIMENT
Date of Death: 3 July 1916
Age: 29
Cemetery: Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France

He was one of three sons of Annie Mayers (formerly Cleary) to be killed during the war. Michael had been born in Dublin and, at some point, the family moved to Stockport. His father, Michael, was dead.

He worked for R Hornsby and Son Ltd, Reddish and enlisted in the army on 1 September 1914. He was killed in the early stages of the Battle of the Somme. Michael was originally posted as being missing after the attack and it was not until December 1916 that the War Office concluded that he must have been killed.

His brother, John, died on 26 April 1915 whilst serving with the Royal Dublin Fusiliers and James was killed on 10 April 1918, whilst with the Cheshire Regiment. It is presumed that they did not live in the Stockport area as they are not commemorated on any local Memorial.

None of the three brothers have a known grave and all are commemorated on different Memorials to the Missing.

After the war, Michael's mother was living at 2 Campbell Street, Reddish.
