Albert CLEGG
Rank: Private
Number: 52914
Unit: 13th Battalion CHESHIRE REGIMENT
Date of Death: 21 October 1916
Age: 20
Cemetery: Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France

He was the son of Mrs M E Johnson, 30 Randolph Street, Shaw Heath, Stockport. Albert had been born in Manchester, as had his brother Alfred, but the family is believed to have moved to the Stockport area when he was quite young.

He enlisted into the army in the town, leaving his job with Humphrey & Heywood Ltd. The company operated a chamois leatherworks in Heaton Norris. His number suggests that he would have joined up in 1916, so had probably not been at the front for more than a few weeks.Click here for details of the action in which he was killed.
