Little is known about Harry Clegg other than he had been born in Stockport and that the 1901 Census recorded him as then aged 9. He lived in Edgeley and enlisted into the army in Stockport. His original service number is 2562 which suggests he enlisted within days of war being declared in 1914. He probably went overseas as early as January 1915.

Harry was killed during the Battalion's attack, described here, on the first day of the Third Battle of Ypres. As with many of those killed, he has no known grave and is commemorated on the Memorial to the Missing
