Ernest had been born in Hazel Grove and his mother still lived there at 3 Daniel Street. It is understood that, by the time Ernest was killed, his father had also died.

Before the war, Ernest worked at Mirrlees Ltd and had been connected with the local Wesleyan Chapel and Sunday School. He enlisted at Stockport in October 1914 and served with the Cheshires in France and Italy. In 1916, he will have learnt that his older brother, Frank, had been killed whilst serving with the Cheshires' 13th Battalion.

Ernest was killed in the action described here. Further information about him can be found in the book "Hazel Grove to Armageddon" by John Eaton.
