William COCKER
Rank: Private
Number: 86234
Unit: 1st Battalion CHESHIRE REGIMENT
Date of Death: 1 (or 11) March 1920
Age: 17
Cemetery: Willow Grove Cemetery, Stockport

On the face of it, William's death so long after the end of the War and at such a young age seems as though it as an error. However, it must be realised that, on 11 November 1918, it was only an Armistice that had been signed. This was a temporary cessation of hostilities and a peace treaty was not signed until 1921. The Commonwealth War Graves Commission commemorates all those who were serving until 1921. Presumably, the local people who arranged for the erection of the South Reddish Memorial also considered it appropriate to have William's name inscribed on it.

He was the son of William and Jane Cocker, 11 Birkdale Road, South Reddish and it is not known how or where he died (although it will have been in the UK)
