William had been born locally, the son of Mr & Mrs C H Colman, 20 Clarendon Street, Heaton Norris. After the war, Mr & Mrs Colman had moved to 66 Bury Street, Stockport.

Before he enlisted on 7 September 1914, William had worked as a doubler at T Rivett Ltd, Lancashire Hill. He went overseas in September 1915. He received a minor wound in June 1916, but quickly recovered and was not eligible for home leave.

News of his death will have come quickly to the family in Stockport and they may not have finished grieving for him, before more bad news arrived. His younger brother, Charles, was also killed in action in October 1917.
