No information about James Connell's private life was discovered in the original research for this project. However, since the website "went live" a descendent has confirmed that he was born in about 1891, the son of Allatt and Lily and, at the time of the 1901 Census, was living at 11 Penny Lane, Stockport. Before he enlisted, he had been living at Tame Street in the Portwood area of town.

His service number suggests that he was an early volunteer for the army, enlisting in September 1914. He was killed at the Battle of Doiran and has no known grave.
