It has not been possible to establish the nature of James Cottam's connection with Stockport. He was born in Croston, Lancashire and his parents, James and Ann, lived there at 38 Westhead Drive. He was conscripted into the army at Chorley, in late 1916.

It can only be presumed that he might have been working in the area or had relatives, locally, who wanted to commemorate him. He was killed in the fighting described here.
