Arthur Gordon CRESSWELL
Rank: Lance Corporal
Number: 65988
Unit: 12th Battalion CHESHIRE REGIMENT
Date of Death: 14 October 1919
Age: 30
Cemetery: Haidar Pasha Cemetery, Istanbul, Turkey

Gordon was the son of prominent Marple family. His father, Arthur Mann Cresswell, was, according to the 1901 Census, a grey cloth merchant and he was also a Justice of the Peace. The family lived at "Highfield" in the village.

The local press, reporting his death, noted that he had been in the army from very early in the war, but this is not confirmed by his service number. It is possible that, as with many men, he served with a different Battalion and with a different number, prior to transferring to the 12th Cheshires. However, it has not been possible to find Arthur's records on the National Archives website to confirm this.

He is reported to have died as a result of an accident. The details are unknown.

Further information about Arthur is available in the book "Remembered" by P Clarke, A Cook & J Bintliff.
