The name of S Cronin is commemorated on the Stockport War Memorial, amongst those serving with the Cheshires. Although it is impossible to be sure that a man of this name did not exist, research suggests that an error has been made on the Memorial and the intention was to commemorate Private Stephen Cronan who was born in Stockport and enlisted into the army in the town.

20 year old Cronan’s  service number, 9743, confirms he was a regular soldier and went overseas with the 1st Battalion, Cheshire Regiment, on 11 September 1914. By 8 November, he had been wounded in action and was in a military hospital at Wimereux, on the Channel coast, where he died.
