Rank: Gunner

Date of Death: 20 November 1918

Cemetery: Baghdad (North Gate) War Cemetery, Iraq

Harold and his younger sister, Bessie, were born in Dukinfield and they were living there with their parents, John and Sarah, when the census was taken in 1901. The family home was then 47 Queen Street, but they later moved to 254 Hyde Road, Woodley.

Harold’s service number was issued late in the War and indicates that his original unit was 335th Brigade, Royal Field Artillery. This appears to have been a home service Territorial unit. 337th Brigade was similarly home based until the end of 1917 when it was sent to Mesopotamia (modern day Iraq). It can be assumed that Harold transferred to it then or shortly afterwards, as part of a draft of troops bringing it up to strength. He died of natural causes.
