Nothing is known for certain about John's personal life, other than he was born in Stockport and enlisted in the army in the town.

The 1901 Census lists three with that name living in the town, but only one is likely to have been of military age in 1914. This is a John Cummings, aged 17, who was then working as a cotton doubler.

John was killed in action in the fighting described here and is buried near to where he fell.
