Gordon must have lied about his age to enlist in the army. His original service, 2672, indicates that he joined up around the early winter of 1914 or early in 1915, originally serving with the 6th Cheshires. His parents, Thomas and Mrs E Currie, lived at 13 St Matthews Road, Edgeley and, presumably had no objection to him serving.

He took part in an attack described here. Either during the attack, or in the hours following, he was seriously wounded. He will have received first aid treatment, from the Battalion's Medical Officer, and then been evacuated away from the battlefield to a Casualty Clearing Station a few miles away at Meaulte. There, military surgeons will have done all that was possible to save his life, without success.
