Thomas had been born in Ockbrook, Derbyshire and was still living there, aged 9, at the time of the 1901 Census. The Census also records that his father was Joshua, aged 33, a woodman and his mother, Louisa, 34. He had two younger brothers - George, 5 and Harry, 3.

Thomas enlisted in the army at Doncaster. His number suggests he was probably a fairly recent recruit. He was killed during the Battle of the Lys

Thomas' connection with Stockport is unknown. He may have been working in the area or had relatives living here who wanted to commemorate him.
