John had been born in the parish of St Mary's C of E Church, Stockport. His parents were Emma and Peter Davies, 24 Canal Street. He was a regular soldier and had served with the Regiment in India for six years.

The Battalion landed back in England on 24 December 1914 and left again for France within a few days. John was killed in action during a German attack at Frezenberg in Belgium. He was originally posted as missing and it was not until September 1916 that the War Office made an official presumption that he must have been killed.
